Improvise with Perry the Sheep!

One of the most popular characters to emerge from the release of ClassPlay this school year was a friendly little sheep with a recorder-eating problem.

Have you and your students met Perry the Sheep?

In this ClassPlay song, students follow along with Perry – a sleepwalking sheep who eats a recorder and then speaks, using the notes B and A, as students repeat the notes back to him.

Some of Perry’s biggest fans are in Shari Gerth’s class at Battleground Academy in Nashville, TN. She wrote to tell us about her students response:

My students and I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the recorder materials. We have worked on “AAA”, “Baba Oo La La” (so much fun), and now “Perry the Sheep.”

The other day, I was finishing talking to a colleague outside my music room door, while my 4th Grade students were waiting for class to start. All of a sudden, I noticed they’ve begun to sing and play “Perry the Sheep” with no music or lyrics on the whiteboard.

The next thing I know, the experience evolves into an improvisation activity. One student at a time would jump up to lead their class in a one measure pattern during the break for Perry to play. Each child made up their own pattern, and the other students used their ears and eyes to replicate the pattern.

It was a Win-Win!

Shari’s students aren’t the only ones who love Perry!

Check out this video from Pasadena ISD teachers who just couldn’t resist playing Perry on their own after school:
