in In the Quaver Classroom!,Mobile Apps,

Hello all you marvelous teachers out there in Quaver-land!  Bradley Minnigan, Quaver Marketing Coordinator, here to help you use on iPads in your classroom!

I hear lots of questions on the road about iPads and how to use our Flash website on these devices that don’t read Flash. Do not fear – I have a solution for you!  In my last post, I showed you how to Make your Own Interactive Whiteboard for under $100, and today, I’ll show you one way to use your Quaver resources – including the brand new QK-5 Curriculum – on your iPad!

Introducing the FLASH CONVERTER!

A Flash converter does just what its name suggests – it converts Flash into information your iOS device can read! There are several popular Flash Conversion apps, but the one I’ve used successfully with our site and want to show you today is called PhotonYou can find Photon in the App Store for $4.99.

Follow the steps below to set up Photon and access everything at from your iPad:

Step 1: Boot up your handy-dandy iPad and find the App Store.

Search “Photon” – it popped up as the first option in my search results for $4.99.  Purchase the app and it will start downloading to your device. Talk to your IT Department about purchasing Photon for multiple iPads in your classroom. They can use Apple’s Volume Purchase Program for Education to purchase in bulk and set up new apps on multiple devices.

Step 2 : Open the App and Adjust Settings.

Photon is basically a web browser, so it will look much like Safari or the browser you typically use on your iPad.  You’ll need to adjust the settings so that Photon functions optimally for

  • Click on the “Gear” icon in the upper right-hand corner to open up the settings window.

  • Your Bandwidth should be selected automatically, but you can manipulate it by choosing a higher or lower number if you experience a slow connection. My ideal “Bandwidth” was 4, but I tried 1, 4, and 6 here at Quaver HQ and saw no difference between the options.
  • Scroll down in the Gear Menu to Popup Blocker and turn it off – uses popups (new windows) to display items like IWB Activities and ClassPlay songs – so you don’t want to block them in Photon.

Step 3: Lock your iPad into Landscape Orientation

To keep your screen from rotating with your movement, you can lock the screen into Landscape and always view as you see it on your computer.

  • Double click the “Home” button on your iPad – the round button below the screen.  This brings up all your recent apps.
  • Slide your finger from left to right across these apps to reveal the next screen.

  • The icon on the far left will allow you to toggle the Rotation Lock on and off.  Make sure you are holding the iPad in landscape mode and click on the Rotation Lock so that the padlock icon appears in the middle.
  • Tap the home button again to go back to the app.

Step 4: Go to!

Surf on over to and you will notice a green page full of text instead of the street scene you’re used to seeing. This is no time to panic! Now is when your Photon powers kick into high gear!

lightning bolt

Just to the right of your navigation bar (that space where you type in you will see a little lightning bolt.

Touch that lightning bolt and BOOM CHICKA BOOM!  You should now see the homepage street scene!

When the lightning bolt disappears, you’ll see three mouse options in its place.

Choose the one that looks like a closed fist – this will work best when navigating the website.

Step 5: Sign In to

Click the “Sign In” window on the website.

To access the on-screen keyboard, look in the upper right-hand corner for the icon that looks like a keyboard – that will allow you to type in your username and password.

Keyboard1When your keyboard pops up, it covers the username and password fields to sign in.  Here’s an easy fix:

  • In the bottom right-hand corner of the keyboard, there is another keyboard icon
  • Hold down this button and a “Split” option comes up
  • Click on split and you will be able to see the username and password fields.

You can hide the keyboard by clicking on the keyboard icon again.  At this point, I like running the website in “Full Screen Mode” – just click the upper right-hand corner where the two arrows are pointing away from each other.

Step 6: Now have fun on the website!

Try the IWBs!  Fire up ClassPlay!  Go through a lesson in the QK-5 Curriculum Lesson Plan Presenter!  Anything you can access in your account is available to you here on your  iPad!

Overall, I’m impressed with the way this Photon app works with our site. I did notice it runs slightly slower than on a computer, but that was not much of an issue for my use. Dragging can be a little tricky as well, but with a little practice, you’ll get the hang of it.

I also discovered a Photo EDU version of the app that allows more control for IT Departments. The instructions are the same for setting up and using Photon EDU!

As always, please contact me if you have questions, in the Customer Service office here at Quaver HQ or on the road with Quaver all over the country!

Took all the steps above and I am still not getting the web site to appear.

This works just fine at home with my wireless network, but does not work here on our campus.

Hi Tommy, So sorry for the trouble! It sounds like perhaps your school wireless is blocking the site. Maybe you can connect us with your IT team to figure this out. I’ll shoot you an email to set up a time!
