Welcome back to the blog, Dave Mastran, Co-creator & Executive Producer of the Quaver brand!

Dave has just returned from a two-day strategic planning meeting with the Quaver management team – a small group working to keep Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music on course to become the most trusted global brand in music education. They met last week at Dave’s Nashville home – what we like to call “Camp David” – armed with ideas from an all-company brainstorming day and suggestions gathered from Quaver teachers and district supervisors around the country.

Their mission (which they chose to accept): to determine the goals for Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music for the next calendar year.

We’ve invited Dave here to share the highlights of the meeting and give a taste of what you can expect in the coming year.

Take it away, Dave.

Strategic Planning

First let me say that this meeting grew out of the tremendous response we have received from our customers in the last year.

Last year at this time, we were a start-up company eager to be part of the music education community. We were convinced that we had something new and exciting to offer music teachers and their students. What we didn’t know is whether the teachers and kids would agree with our assessment. The answer? It’s in the steady flow of laudatory reviews from key publications, emails from grateful teachers, and even videos of excited, engaged kids responding to Quaver. Our customers agree. Quaver is indeed a Marvelous World of Music.

But even our success pointed to more work to be done.

If we were to honor our promise to constantly add to Quaver’s resources, we needed a coordinated plan for the year ahead, including specific goals for new activities and teaching tools.  The two days we spent planning gave us time to focus on those goals.  I was proud of the strategic thinking the management team brought to the off-site. We covered more ground than I thought possible and emerged with a set of goals, which even I (not the most patient person) found aggressive. Yet when I reported these goals to the staff the day after our planning off-site, their response told me we will meet every one of them.

Our customers should know – there are some extremely exciting things planned for Quaver this year:

  • New applications for the classroom
  • New tools for teaching, administration, and assessment
  • Enhancements to existing features on the website
  • iPad applications
  • And more!

We are committed to saving you tons of time and effort even as we deliver a 21st Century program that reaches kids where they are.

As this time, we have a staff of about 40, with 25 full-time programmers, graphic artists, audio engineers and content specialists staff developing the website and 10 plus teachers providing additional content over the summer break. But as good as our staff is, we know we must continue to invest in quality people to reach our lofty goals. We will therefore be hiring additional staff across our organization, giving special attention to experts in content and curriculum development. We are also adding to our Quaver Advisory Council to give us additional nationwide perspective from active music teachers.  Finally, we are forming a foundation to help us follow through on our commitment to advancing music education. You will be hearing more about the foundation in the weeks to come.

The bottom line to all this talk of strategic planning?
Hold on to your hats – we’re just getting started,
and we’d love to have you along for the ride!
